Navigating Your Way Through the Food Maze-Book Review "Nutrition Trek" by Jamie Risedorph

Nutrition Trek is a concise yet entertaining book that helps you to make well-informed, healther choices at the grocery store. The book opens with a quick, reference-style review on how to read food labels at the grocery store--remember your glasses! Then the tour through the food maze begins, navigating you through each section of the grocery and pointing out food hazards along the way like aisle "end caps."

The proper way to determine produce freshness and nutrient quality is pointed out as part of the tour as well as how to avoid the seduction of sugary sweets and processed foods. Remember not taking the wrong turn in the maze will improve your health and save you in health care dollars.

An entire chapter is devoted to uncovering some of the lies, myths and misleading information the food industry has used to sell their products. You will be amazed at who some of the worst offenders are.

One of the final chapters reveals places and activities that make it possible for you to obtain your food cheaper yet fresher and more nutrient dense. Also included are tips for growing your own food and harvesting wild plants to eat for free! (For one of the author's favorite free foods visit Jamie's Nutrition Nuggets and read "The Dandelion, with Reverence")

The book has many helpful charts, resource lists, quick tips and even some easy but healthy recipes that help you make use of all the healthy shopping tips you just learned.
